Warming Up for Fall Activities

10/24/2015

Comments

The kids are back in school, football season is underway, the weather's cooling off, and the leaves are changing colors.  Fall is here and we have some tips for staying healthy through the changing seasons.

If you're a football fan, hopefully your team is staying healthy and playing well.  Did you know that every team in the NFL has a Chiropractor to help keep the team healthy? Yep, even the NFL knows how important chiropractic is!  And if you're a 49'er fan, be sure to check out this video from Jerry Rice...

If you're a student, you may be more focused on classes and studying, so staying healthy to ace your exams can be really important.  Check out our article on healthy backpack use to make sure you're not hurting your back every time you go to class.  And be sure to read about how your posture can impact your health so you can practice good posture while you study!

Or maybe in the fall, you prefer to enjoy the changing colors of leaves, visiting the pumpkin patch with the kids, and having cozy dinners with friends. You may need to mow the lawn before inviting your guests over and once all those beautiful leaves fall, raking them up will be the next task.

Whatever your "sport" may be, it's important to keep your body warmed and your muscles loose. Whether you're finding the biggest pumpkin in the patch, playing a little football with your friends, or raking the leaves into piles for the kids, be sure to start with some stretches.

If you find yourself feeling strained or injured from your fall activities, our Doctor of Chiropractic can help you heal faster.  Dr. Adam Drapkin has been practicing Chiropractic for over two decades and has treated many kinds of strains and injuries.  Give us a call to schedule your appointment and don't miss out on all the fall fun!

The Prescription Painkiller Epidemic

10/23/2015

Comments

The campaign for National Chiropractic Health Month this year is #PainFreeNation.  But what is that really about?  If you think it's promoting chiropractic to relieve pain, you're right, but that's just the start.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there has been a dramatic increase in mortality rates involving prescription opioids and overdose deaths. The problem is so severe that the CDC has declared the abuse of prescription pain medications an “epidemic.”

#PainFreeNation is actually focusing on addressing choosing chiropractic to treat pain before, instead of, or in conjunction with other more aggressive treatments, such as prescription painkillers.

Healthy Ways to Identify and Reduce Stress

Stress and tension.  These states are familiar to most people and are quite common in our society. Whether you experience stress regularly (because of a job, situation, or natural tendency), or you only experience it on occasion, it's important to have healthy ways of dealing with it.

It is helpful to understand the different types of stress, so you can identify what you're experiencing and how best to address it.  To categorize stress and tension simply, there are three different kinds - physical, mental, and emotional.

Physical stress and tension relates to your physical body.  If your body is stressed trying to recover from an illness or injury, or your muscles are tensed from overexertion, this is physical stress.

Mental stress is more about your mind and mental functioning.  Perhaps you've spent long hours working on a project or when trying to solve a problem, you find yourself "overthinking" and maybe even obsessing about finding a solution.  These are just a few examples of mental stress.

Earlier this month, you may have seen our blog about the NFL and Chiropractic.  The Professional Football Chiropractic Society has noted that all 32 teams in the NFL use Chiropractic to help their athletes stay healthy.  And the amount of adjustments in the NFL is astounding!

Jerry Rice, former NFL player for the San Francisco 49ers is known as one of the Greatest Wide Receivers in NFL history.  There is no doubt that he is a talented and skilled athlete, but he also credits much of his health, success, and durability to Chiropractic.

Don't take our word for it, just listen to Jerry Rice speak for himself.  You may not be a professional football player, but if your activities and hobbies are physically demanding or have resulted in an injury, chiropractic could be helpful for you.

Our Doctor of Chiropractic, Dr. Adam Drapkin, can help you restore and maintain your health and wellness.  Give us a call to schedule your appointment so you can enjoy all of your activities to the fullest!

10/12/2015

Comments

If you read our last our blog on Technology & Your Body, you'd know that on average, people check their phones 150 times per day!  Whether you're in line with the average or not, technology is undoubtedly changing our lifestyles.

With the advances we've made in technology, office jobs that involve sitting at a desk and working at a computer are even more common; and even more physical jobs are incorporating technology into the workplace.  Outside of work, social media and easy access to phones and personal devices are changes the way we interact.

These lifestyle changes are contributing to things like "text neck", "head forward posture", and poor posture overall.  It's important to still stay active and changing your position and/or activities can help remind you and your body to maintain proper posture.
