Healing with Daoist Medical Qigong

Healing with Daoist Medical Qigong
By: Eric Schaffer, DMQ

According to Chinese Medicine:
Chinese medicine says: When the body’s energy flows freely, with the right amount of energy - not too much or too little, and is balanced, we will be free from illnesses, emotional problems, and troubled mind. Harmony will be present, and we’ll live longer.

Medical Qigong is Good for Symptoms
Medical qigong clears the energetic and emotional blockages that are at the root of symptoms. Both energetic treatment and self-healing exercises gently “jump start” a return to the smooth flow and balance of the body’s energies. Although a single session is useful to get a sense of the work, symptoms develop over a period of years or decades, and usually a series of sessions is needed to be effective. Progress is reviewed session by session, and after a series of 3 or 6 sessions. A self-healing qigong exercise prescription is offered during the session. Affordable self-healing qigong classes are offered monthly.

What is Qigong?
Using movement exercises, breath work, and meditation, Qigong is an ancient Chinese discipline that trains and synchronizes our body, mind, and spirit. Qigong means “energy training” and “breath training”.

Medical qigong
Medical qigong combines the skill and knowledge of training the body’s energy from qigong, with Chinese medicine theory. It is a complete, holistic medicine that treats the body, emotions, mind, and energy.

A Healing Session
In a typical session, the practitioner and client have a dialog about the client’s health concerns and symptoms, and discuss what will occur in the session. Medical qigong diagnosis occurs through a health questionnaire, conversation, tongue diagnosis, and an energetic assessment that occurs during treatment.

The Healing Powers of Forgiveness and Compassion

There is much insight dedicated to the topic of forgiveness that has been passed down for centuries. There is a particular sequence of words, however, that seems to hold volumes of raw, powerful, truth: “Holding a grudge is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die.” These words, spoken by Buddha, are meant to penetrate the issue and generate thought. It's a quote that makes you think, and in return, gives you that “Ah ha!” moment.

We live in a society of rules and laws, but there are some laws of nature that simply cannot be broken. They are often referred to as universal laws, one of which we are all familiar - whatever energy you send out you get back tenfold, or a more commonly used cliché, “What goes around, comes around.” This is the law of Karma.

When we hold a grudge against someone it may end up harming them, but it most certainly harms us more; and in more than one way. Not only is it harmful emotionally and spiritually, but over time, it can make you physically ill. Giving power to such negative feelings is exhausting.

Heads Up - The Technology Lifestyle

10/12/2015

If you read our last our blog on Technology & Your Body, you'd know that on average, people check their phones 150 times per day!  Whether you're in line with the average or not, technology is undoubtedly changing our lifestyles.

With the advances we've made in technology, office jobs that involve sitting at a desk and working at a computer are even more common; and even more physical jobs are incorporating technology into the workplace.  Outside of work, social media and easy access to phones and personal devices are changes the way we interact.

These lifestyle changes are contributing to things like "text neck", "head forward posture", and poor posture overall.  It's important to still stay active and changing your position and/or activities can help remind you and your body to maintain proper posture.

Do you suffer from back pain, neck pain, or headaches?  Have you had repetitive injuries that just don't seem to go away?  Or are you interested in improving your overall wellness?

If you're interested in resolving these challenges or improving your health but don't want pills, prescriptions, or "band-aid" remedies, then you may benefit from Chiropractic.

While Doctors of Chiropractic are most well-known for spinal manipulations, they are also highly trained doctors who specialize in health and wellness, injury prevention, and diet, nutrition, & exercise recommendations.

Oregon Governor Kate Brown has proclaimed October as Oregon Chiropractic Health and Wellness Month.  This proclamation supports chiropractic as drug-free treatment for back pain, and Chiropractors as specialists in health and wellness.

Heads Up - Technology and Your Body

Did you know that on average, people are checking their cell phones 150 times per day?? According to the Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers's annual Internet Trends report, the trend of using our cell phones is on the rise.  With technology continuing to advance, it doesn't look like this trend will be changing anytime soon.

But is it taking a toll on your body? Using small personal devices is also creating an increase in head forward posture, or as the American Chiropractic Association calls it below "text neck." Tilting your head forward and down to look at those screens is an easy habit to form, and when your tired, the poor posture is even more likely to occur.

Free Informational Seminar: Introduction to Fall Cleansing and Rejuvenation
Tuesday, October 6th from 5:30pm-6:30pm

Picture
According to the Ayurvedic principle of “Rutucharya”, or seasonal routine, fall is an ideal time for a period of intentional, focused self-care – an opportunity to cultivate some healthy new habits and let go of some old, not-so-healthy ones.  For some, this means cleansing.  For others, this means rest & rejuvenation.  Upasana will be offering both a 9-day coached group cleanse and a 5-day supported “rejuvenation therapy” program this fall.

If you’re feeling tired, out of sorts, in need of rest and a fresh start to face the coming winter and holiday season, join us for this free seminar on October 6th and let Upasana help you determine which path might be right for you. The Ayurvedic approach to seasonal routine will help you build immunity and feel clearer, stronger and more energized in the coming winter season.  Below you'll find more details on the two different options.

The Key to Aging Gracefully

6/17/2015

Recently one of our patients told us a story about going to see his doctor about knee pain.  He didn’t have any history of knee pain and now his right knee ached daily.  After a brief visit, his doctor told him it must be that he’s just getting older.  Confused by this, he asked the question, “Then why doesn’t my left knee hurt?  It’s the same age as my right knee!”  His doctor didn’t have an answer, so he decided to come see us.

We see a wide range of people at our office and the differences amongst them can be striking; some patients in their 70’s struggle with walking around the block, while others tell us about their daily runs.  So what’s the difference?  Why are some of our older patients able to be so much more active?
