During the holidays, we’re often reminded to focus our attention on gratitude; gratitude for our lives, the people in it, and all the little things that make it more joyous.  With the recent accolades from the Weekly’s Best of Eugene, a successful open house, and some very kind reviews, we’ve been feeling your gratitude and have been appreciative of your willingness to share it.  But, we didn’t want to let this year pass without expressing our gratitude for you.

Working as Dr. Adam’s assistant, I’ve been an observer to hundreds of chiropractic appointments. Our coordinated care approach also means our therapists discuss your cases (when necessary and appropriate), to ensure you’re receiving the best and most effective care we can offer.  Over time, we’ve come to a consensus… you are all amazing!

You come to us with your worries, your fears, your hopes, your goals, and some very interesting stories. Addressing health concerns can be challenging and worrisome, but you choose us to help you and we are honored by your choice.

Windward Empathy to Join A Healing Space, January 2016

Please join us in welcoming Windward Empathy to A Healing Space.  These two talented healers will be bringing their work in Empathic Listening to our offices.  There is much more information to come, but here is a little intro about Mark & Heather...

Picture
We are Mark and Heather Schlessman and our story begins in Portland, Oregon where we had just moved to shepherd a religious community. Both of us had a longing to be present in this life in a very different way, and we weren’t sure how to get there.

Each of us came to find the work of Marshall Rosenberg regarding nonviolent communication, and we were lucky enough to find a protégé of his, Kathy Marchant. We took the introductory course and then began the weekly practice sessions in an empathic community that continued until we moved to Hawaii 4 years later.

Free Informational Seminar: Introduction to Fall Cleansing and Rejuvenation
Tuesday, October 6th from 5:30pm-6:30pm

Picture
According to the Ayurvedic principle of “Rutucharya”, or seasonal routine, fall is an ideal time for a period of intentional, focused self-care – an opportunity to cultivate some healthy new habits and let go of some old, not-so-healthy ones.  For some, this means cleansing.  For others, this means rest & rejuvenation.  Upasana will be offering both a 9-day coached group cleanse and a 5-day supported “rejuvenation therapy” program this fall.

If you’re feeling tired, out of sorts, in need of rest and a fresh start to face the coming winter and holiday season, join us for this free seminar on October 6th and let Upasana help you determine which path might be right for you. The Ayurvedic approach to seasonal routine will help you build immunity and feel clearer, stronger and more energized in the coming winter season.  Below you'll find more details on the two different options.

The Gift of Healthy Spines for Kids

9/23/2015

A healthy spine and nervous system is important for everyone, but is especially important for kids and teens. During the various stages of youth, kids’ bodies and minds are still developing; the habits they have now will impact how they feel and can influence their health in the future.

Helping kids maintain their health with chiropractic care has great benefits, including improving posture, decreasing the chance of injury, decreasing the likelihood and/or impact of spinal problems such as scoliosis, and improving overall health.

Chiropractic has no age limits and kids can benefit greatly from beginning chiropractic before they reach adulthood.  Studies have shown that children who receive regular chiropractic care are less frequently sick, are able to concentrate better, and are generally healthier. As a parent, you can give your kids the gift of health.

Here are four things that you can do today to help improve your child’s spinal health:
  • Chiropractic care. Just as children need good hygiene, regular dental care, and proper nutrition, they also need regular chiropractic care. Chiropractic care will help to restore and maintain normal spinal and nervous system function, allowing a child’s body to develop optimally.
    • Regular chiropractic care will vary for each child.  Some kids may only need a check up every now and then, while others may need to be seen more often. Whatever the frequency is for your child, it is important and helpful to have a professional assess the health of their spine.  Having a “baseline” will make it easier to detect changes and evaluate how they are progressing as they grow.
    • If your child participates in contact sports such as football, the need for chiropractic is dramatically increased.  The impact of these contact sports can cause concussions as well as strains on their musculoskeletal system.  Seeing a chiropractor regularly can help ensure that they are properly aligned and make it easier to detect when changes occur or new symptoms arise.

Back to School: Backpacks for Healthy Kids

9/21/2015

PictureLeaning forward to counterbalance
For most kids, school is back in session or will be very soon.  In addition to all the back to school supplies you’ve been shopping for, the backpacks to carry these supplies are needed as well.  Whether you’re reusing an old backpack or buying a new one, the backpack your child carries could have an impact on their bodies that you might not be aware of.  Recent studies have indicated that carrying heavy backpacks is causing an increase in back pain among our youth.

And it’s not just for your kids.  Maybe you’ve decided to go back to school to finish a new degree or prefer to carry your personal and work items in a backpack.

Carrying a heavy backpack puts a lot of strain on the shoulders and back, but it can also influence you or your child’s posture.  To balance the weight of a heavy bag, the body will compensate by leaning forward.  This counterbalance can contribute to head forward posture, which you can learn more about here.

The American Chiropractic Association has recommended a few steps to help minimize the negative effects of carrying heavy backpacks.  We've shared them with you below, along with a few of our own.

Tips for purchasing a new pack:

If you’ve already purchased a new backpack for the school year, it might not be too late.  Many stores allow refunds for certain periods of time and if the backpack you purchased is causing your child pain, it will be worthwhile to keep looking for the right pack. Otherwise, you will find tips below on how to make the best of the backpack you have.

Free Class: Introduction to Ayurveda

Ayurveda:  Ancient Wisdom for Modern Living

We have a saying in Ayurveda:  Everything is medicine, everything is poison.   Food and lifestyle choices that may balance and provide optimal health for one individual may be all wrong for someone else.  Understanding your unique constitution and “disease proneness”, and learning to recognize imbalance is the key to longevity, peace, and optimal well-being.

Ayurveda is considered to be the oldest healing science known to humanity.  It originated in India more than 5,000 years ago.  The roots of many “natural healing” systems now familiar in the West have their roots in Ayurveda, and its timeless principles are just as relevant today as they have ever been.

Join Upasana Giglia, Ayurvedic Practitioner here at A Healing Space, for a FREE informational seminar on Monday evening, August 3rd from 5:30 - 6:30**.  Learn how the timeless principles of Ayurveda can provide you with a deeper understanding of what you need to stay balanced and healthy.
**Based on your requests, we will be repeating this class on Monday, August 31, from 5:30-6:30pm.**

Space is limited – pre-registration is required. Contact A Healing Space at 541-343-1887 to reserve your seat!

No News is Good News - A Cleanse for your Mind

The Master Cleanse, Liver cleanse, Juice Cleanse, Sugar detox. Cleanses and detoxes have become a popular trend in health and wellness.  Even if you don’t know exactly what they are or how to do them, you’ve probably heard of them, or maybe have seen someone drinking that water-lemon- cayenne pepper-drink, which is the main recipe for the Master Cleanse.

The basic concept for any cleanse or detox is the same– eliminate toxins from the system. There are two ways to decrease the toxic load on your system – either remove the toxins that have already built up and/or stop putting the toxins in.

Well, there’s another cleanse for you to consider, and it doesn’t require you to change your diet and eating habits at all! The Media Cleanse.  With so much focus on our bodies and physical wellness, sometimes we overlook our mental and emotional wellness, but it is extremely important to your well-being and often the root of physical problems.

So what exactly is a Media Cleanse and how do you do it?
