Healthy Ways to Identify and Reduce Stress

Stress and tension.  These states are familiar to most people and are quite common in our society. Whether you experience stress regularly (because of a job, situation, or natural tendency), or you only experience it on occasion, it's important to have healthy ways of dealing with it.

It is helpful to understand the different types of stress, so you can identify what you're experiencing and how best to address it.  To categorize stress and tension simply, there are three different kinds - physical, mental, and emotional.

Physical stress and tension relates to your physical body.  If your body is stressed trying to recover from an illness or injury, or your muscles are tensed from overexertion, this is physical stress.

Mental stress is more about your mind and mental functioning.  Perhaps you've spent long hours working on a project or when trying to solve a problem, you find yourself "overthinking" and maybe even obsessing about finding a solution.  These are just a few examples of mental stress.
Emotional stress is related your feelings and emotions.  Experiencing the death of a loved one, feeling hurt because of a fight with your spouse, or being overwhelmed by fear because of a change in your life, are all examples of emotional stress.

One of the challenges with stress and tension is that they can all affect each other.  If you're experiencing emotional stress, you may find that your shoulders are tensed and your stomach is upset.  Or, if you're overworking yourself mentally, you may find that you're starting to feel emotionally and physically exhausted, with no energy or patience for anything else.

If you're able to identify what kind of stress or tension you're experiencing, it makes it easier to find a healthy way to relieve it.

If you're mentally stressed, taking some time for meditation and exercise can help relieve tension and give your mind a break.

If you're emotionally stressed, watching a funny movie or finding an optimistic quote can be uplifting and stress-reducing.

Or, if you're physically stressed, choosing meditation or humor might help you refocus and relieve tension.
