No News is Good News - A Cleanse for your Mind

The Master Cleanse, Liver cleanse, Juice Cleanse, Sugar detox. Cleanses and detoxes have become a popular trend in health and wellness.  Even if you don’t know exactly what they are or how to do them, you’ve probably heard of them, or maybe have seen someone drinking that water-lemon- cayenne pepper-drink, which is the main recipe for the Master Cleanse.

The basic concept for any cleanse or detox is the same– eliminate toxins from the system. There are two ways to decrease the toxic load on your system – either remove the toxins that have already built up and/or stop putting the toxins in.

Well, there’s another cleanse for you to consider, and it doesn’t require you to change your diet and eating habits at all! The Media Cleanse.  With so much focus on our bodies and physical wellness, sometimes we overlook our mental and emotional wellness, but it is extremely important to your well-being and often the root of physical problems.

So what exactly is a Media Cleanse and how do you do it?

We are bombarded with news, media, and a constant flow of information.  If you ever watch the news, whether on your local news station or continuously streaming on your computer, it’s almost all negative, concerning, or upsetting.  How often do you think, “Wow, that news report was really uplifting!”?  While some news may directly impact your life, such as the weather, the majority of it probably doesn’t immediately impact your life personally.

A media cleanse is simply about taking a break from the constant flow of media we have access to.  During the summer when outdoor and social activities often increase, it can be even easier to do. A media cleanse can vary from person to person, depending on what their “regular” media intake is.  If you are a news-obsessed, phone alerts set, streaming media-junkie, perhaps a media cleanse means cutting out all radio, TV, written, and internet news for a week or two; if you simply can’t break away (because of your job, actual need, or general addiction), maybe limiting your intake to certain outlets or certain times of day will help.  If you already limit your exposure to media, maybe taking break from social media will be a better fit for you.

“But what if something important happens? I don’t want to miss it.”  It’s pretty much guaranteed that if something important happens you will find out from your friends, family, or coworkers.

The best part about the media cleanse is that you can choose what it means for you.  Sometimes the intake of media has become so habitual, you don’t even realize how much you’re listening to the news or how often you’re checking your media feeds.  So challenge yourself and see how much media you can break away from.  See if your mood or eating habits change.  Notice if you suddenly have extra time in your days or extra space in your mind.  Whatever level of cleansing you choose to do, the impact can be remarkable.  Which is exactly why, in our modern society, a media cleanse may be just what your mind and soul need.
