The campaign for National Chiropractic Health Month this year is #PainFreeNation. But what is that really about? If you think it's promoting chiropractic to relieve pain, you're right, but that's just the start.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there has been a dramatic increase in mortality rates involving prescription opioids and overdose deaths. The problem is so severe that the CDC has declared the abuse of prescription pain medications an “epidemic.”
#PainFreeNation is actually focusing on addressing choosing chiropractic to treat pain before, instead of, or in conjunction with other more aggressive treatments, such as prescription painkillers.

The image released from the American Chiropractic Association shows which doctors are prescribing painkillers - with Chiropractic Physicians prescribing painkillers 0% of the time. Although painkillers have some value in certain cases and situations, there are side effects to prescriptions that aren't listed on the bottle.
Painkillers mask pain. These prescriptions do not resolve the cause of the pain but mask the pain someone is feeling. One of the biggest challenges and side effects of this pain-masking is that it does not give an accurate sense of the condition.
If you're using painkillers, you may not be able to tell if you've truly healed or if you're just numb to the pain. At times not feeling the pain can be helpful, but if you're overexerting yourself because you don't feel pain, the healing process could actually be slowed and flare ups may even cause a backslide.
Only you and your doctor can know when painkillers are appropriate, but a Doctor of Chiropractic can help you choose non-pharmaceutical options that can reduce pain and assist with healing. Give us a call to schedule your appointment with our Chiropractor, Dr. Adam Drapkin.
