My passion is to assist you in becoming pain-free. I work with your body posture as a guide in treating the source of your pain. My goal is to support you both during our sessions and with a personally designed home regime that develops more flexibility and strength.
Tell us about your primary training and any continuing education you have done. I completed my Personal Training certification through NASM®, and received my LMT license from Lane Community College in 2005. I went on to receive certification as a Postural Alignment Specialist and Gait Analysis Specialist through the Egoscue University (2007). I have also received advanced training in postural restoration In 2011 from the Postural Restoration Institute, I completed my Master of Arts degree in Bath, England.
What unique skills and gifts distinguish you? How would you describe your style? I am an exercise therapist who combines the Egoscue Method® with Postural Restoration to alleviate postural deviations that are responsible for chronic pain. I coach clients through a personally designed series of gentle stretches and exercises to restore the body to proper function. I am passionate about changing the belief-paradigm in individuals who think they have permanent conditions such as “carpel tunnel syndrome” or a “bad back or knee.” My approach shows clients how their postural deviations are creating altered movement patterns leading to excessive wear and tear on joints, muscular imbalances, loss of strength and flexibility, compensation, and finally pain.
What issues are you best at addressing with your clients? I like working with clients who have low back pain, knee pain, rotator cuff issues, or any other kind of chronic muscular-skeletal pain. I have had a great deal of success working with conditions such as herniated or degenerative discs, sciatica, stenosis, scoliosis, joint pain, arthritis, tendonitis, shoulder, hip, knee, or foot pain, plantar fasciitis, carpel tunnel syndrome, headaches, migraines, and TMJ pain.
How do you assess clients? I preform an in-depth postural assessment, functional testing and gait analysis to determine the root cause of discomfort in the body.
Why did you choose this work? I am passionate about assisting others in learning to be in touch with their bodies and knowing how to be self-sufficient. Addressing the basic structure and posture of the body is a very effective way to ease discomfort from recent, as well as long-standing postural misalignment.
Where were you born and how did you come to Eugene? I grew up in Salem, OR and moved to Eugene in 2001 when I began attending the University of Oregon. I made this my home as I have fallen in love with the beautiful people, culture and health-conscious atmosphere.
Share a little about your personal journey as a healing practitioner. What life experiences have enriched or changed your work? In 2005, I experienced debilitating back pain. Discovering the Egoscue Method® was what allowed me to return to a return to an active lifestyle and pain-free living!
What is your definition of healing? Society fosters anxiety, stress and bad lifestyles. We end up being brains walking around that are not connected to their body. Healing is fostering communication from brain to body through postural awareness. The key is also increasing cognitive awareness that body’s need an active lifestyle. Healing takes place when physical, mental, emotional and spiritual balance and equilibrium are restored.
What are you passionate about professionally and personally? I am passionate about assisting people in achieving a pain-free living! I am overjoyed when I give a patient an exercise using a muscle they are not aware of. I ask them to make connection with that part of their body, and when they get it, new connections are made! I am a songwriter and performer. Singing is a soul level, creative outlet. Music brings community together and is food for the soul! I thoroughly enjoy running and hiking and continually seek to live a healthy, active lifestyle.
What life accomplishments are you most proud of? One of the most empowering experiences of my life was completing a 6-week trek at high altitude (25,000+ feet) in Zanskar, India after having been ill with pneumonia. This increased my intention in my work to support clients in finding optimal functioning in their bodies.
Personal Invitation My work invites you to explore and release the condition, not just mask the symptom. Your ‘whole body posture’ affects the symptom being presented. Together, we will discover and cultivate your perfect body posture. My intention focus on your body as a whole, and treat the cause of your pain, not just the symptom.
Testimonial “Poor posture snuck up on me as I aged. Life and injury took its toll and I knew that my posture was not great, but I was unsure how to make any changes. I was impressed with Gina’s skill and knowledge as she patiently guided me through a series of exercises. The work felt like it was introducing me to my body, realigned my posture and made me feel taller and more graceful!”
How do you encourage and support clients in self-care at home? I encourage my clients to be self-sufficient by performing daily exercises and stretches to address their particular need. I teach clients that ultimately they are in charge of their own healing and recovery, thus assisting clients in being self-efficient. The goal is not fostering a dependency on me, but strengthening them. I encourage them to actively take charge of their own recovery by performing daily the exercise menu provided for them.
