Massage is thought by many to be a wonderfully relaxing treat. We, however, believe that massage is much more than a luxury, it is an integral part of any wellness plan designed to improve posture, function, alignment, and health. It is known that massage therapy can relieve stress, reduce blood pressure, boost the immune system, increase blood and lymph circulation, increase range of motion, reduce muscle spasms, and provide relief for chronic and acute pain. When massage is combined with chiropractic care we have seen our patients get out of pain faster, and hold their adjustments longer.

The massage therapists that work at A Healing Space were asked to join our group because they have a strong focus on therapeutic massage. Of course, like many places in Eugene, we can provide a relaxing spa type massage for those who request it. However, the massage available at A Healing Space is singular because our massage therapists work in close communication with our Chiropractors, Naturopath and Acupuncturist to optimize results. Our doctors guide and supervise the care, and our therapists enjoy being a part of the team and helping our patients' problems resolve.

FAQs: Following are a list of the questions most often asked by clients who are coming in for their first massage. If you have a question that's not on this list, our staff will be more than happy to answer it. Just call us up and ask!

Q: How far does one need to undress?

A: Only to your comfort level. You will be under a sheet and fully draped at all times. Some people remove their underwear, others do not. Some people choose to remain clothed from the waist down. It is entirely up to you. Remember it is important to relax during your massage, so if the thought of being undressed (beneath a sheet) while an LMT works on you makes you uncomfortable, don't push yourself.

Q: If the pressure that the massage therapist is applying to my body is uncomfortable, should I try to “tough it out” in order to receive the maximum health benefit from my massage?
A: NO! It is your responsibility to let the massage therapist know if the pressure is too much. We are here to facilitate healing, not send you away with more stress than when you came in!

If you find yourself tensing up against the pressure (either where the pressure is or at another part of your body, it's too much. If you find yourself holding your breath (which many of us do at times without realizing), or if you can't comfortably take deep breaths then the pressure is too much.

Q: Should I try to make conversation during the massage?

A: This is an hour set aside in your busy day that is all about whatever makes you the most comfortable. If you prefer to talk, talk. If you prefer to zone out, by all means do so. Your LMT is a professional who knows that different people prefer different things when it comes to talking during their massage, and they will take their cues from you accordingly.

Q: What if I fall asleep and drool on the table?

A: Then you're getting a good massage!

Q: Why does my massage therapist tell me to drink extra water after my massage? Do I really have to?

A: While some people scoff at the often heard claim that massage releases toxins from the body, (what are these undefined “toxins”, anyway, one might ask?) what is indisputable is that massage increases local circulation in the areas that are worked on. Increased circulation speeds up metabolic processes, which includes the process of elimination. All metabolic wastes are excreted in a form of water solutes through the excretory organs. So if your metabolic processes are sped up, and they use a water based solution to eliminate the natural things that we eliminate on a daily basis, then we need to take in more water to return to homeostasis after receiving massage. The bottom line being that staying adequately hydrated is good for all of us, so - yes - drink the extra water after your massage.

Q. There are so many places to get a massage in Eugene why should I go to A Healing Space?

A: While Eugene, Oregon has many massage therapists, we have chosen to work with practitioners who are dedicated to their profession, who specialize in therapeutic massage, and enjoy working as a part of a team of diverse health care providers. Also, our setting is not only unique for Eugene, is is a one of a kind place. Many of our clients say they feel relaxed as soon as they enter our front doors.
